Two schools of thought, and why the EAA shifts the choice

Digital accessibility broadly comes down to two approaches: temporarily masking errors in the browser (an overlay) or structurally repairing the source code. UserWay is one of the best-known overlay widgets and, since 2024, part of the US company Level Access. Now that the European Accessibility Act has been enforceable since mid-2025, IT directors and legal counsels increasingly choose the permanent route. The reason is technical: an overlay places a JavaScript layer over your site, but it often does not truly remove the underlying barriers for assistive technologies such as screen readers, something the Overlay Fact Sheet, signed by more than 800 accessibility experts, has been pointing out for years.

Approach & impactPermanent fixes in your own source code. The error is genuinely resolved and stays resolved, even if you stop using the software. Your investment stays in your own code, with no vendor lock-in.An overlay widget: a JavaScript layer that adjusts what the visitor sees in the browser, without changing your source code. If the subscription ends, the adjustment disappears and the underlying barriers for screen readers return.
Legislation & EU hostingAligned with the European Accessibility Act and EN 301 549, the European standard. Customer data and scans run in the EU (Frankfurt).Originally aimed at the American ADA market; since March 2024 part of the US-based Level Access.
Transparency & burden of proofaxe-core, the global industry standard that also powers Google Lighthouse and Microsoft Accessibility Insights, reproducible by anyone. We split the result: ~57% machine-certain, ~43% human judgment. You get an archivable compliance dossier.A proprietary AI widget. On annual plans, UserWay offers its own 'Litigation Support Program', which underlines that a widget does not remove litigation risk. In the same market, the American FTC fined a competing overlay provider in 2025 for the claim that the tool automatically makes a site WCAG-compliant.
Pricing modelTransparent, fixed monthly prices (€69, €699) based on pages and scan frequency. No surprises as your traffic grows. The widget starts around $49 per month for small sites and scales based on monthly page views; larger plans and enterprise on request.
AI Act transparency checkYes, as a second product on the same platform: chatbot disclosure duty (Article 50) tested, disclosure text delivered, AI register as proof. € 29/mo (excl. VAT), standalone or with any plan.No AI Act transparency check in the published offering (as of July 2026).

Why 100% automated compliance is a myth

No AI fully understands the context of a page. A machine can see whether an image has alt text; only a human judges whether that text actually covers the content. That is why Seviranta splits the result: ~57% we resolve directly by machine, ~43% we put to human judgment. This prevents a false sense of security and helps you demonstrably meet the European Accessibility Act, with a dossier that backs it up.

Choose Seviranta if you…

  • want a lasting solution that stays in your code, not a layer that disappears the moment you stop.
  • need to meet the European standard: the EAA and EN 301 549, with data in the EU (Frankfurt).
  • want transparency: open-source axe-core, a transparent 57/43 split and an archivable dossier.
  • want a fixed, predictable price (€69, €699) with no sales process or surprises as you grow.
